I painted at art school in the 1980s and these photographs are versions of those paintings
I did over 30 years ago. Growing up on the Isle of Wight means I have an enduring love of
the sea; its expansiveness and ever-changing detail. However I see the sea primarily as a
vehicle for exploring form, composition and colour, rather than a subject in itself. These
photographs are more about the absence of detail. Inevitably some of the images are
more representational than others but I’m ok with that. I’m not interested in the
picturesque; in sailing boats, sunsets or seagulls (although I do allow the occasional
swimmer to appear).

I see the images as abstract. When thinking about the work I think about the work of other
artists that I love: Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, James Turrell, Richard Misrach, Gerhard
Richter, Mark Rothko.
I do the bare minimum to the photographs in post processing and their scale is very
important – they need to be big enough to operate as expanses of colour.

My name is Pierre-Yves Monnerville (he/him), a designer and photographer whose artistic journey began at 15 when I discovered Robert Mapplethorpe’s Black Book. As I flipped through its pages, my world shifted. I had never been so shocked and turned on at the same time. I remember thinking ‘if I can elicit those emotions into a single person with my work, then my life will be complete’. This pivotal moment ignited my passion for photography and its power to evoke strong emotions.
My work explores modern masculinity, focusing on how urban living, loneliness, identity, body image affect men. Influenced by artists like Duane Michals, Jim French, Edward Hopper, Caravaggio, and Roy Lichtenstein, I’ve developed a style that blends moody lighting with contemporary edge.
Born in Paris, raised between there and Martinique, I’ve lived in Berlin and London before settling in Brighton.
Beyond creating art, I founded Unapologaytic, an ethical gay brand promoting self-acceptance for GBTQ men. Through my lens and designs, I aim to challenge perceptions, spark conversations, and inspire positive change.
